“Be more specific.”
All the experts say it.
They imply that belonging is a matter of finding people like you.
I don’t buy it.
I’m the ambassador for square pegs in a world full of round holes. I know what it is not to fit. And I desire more than anything the promised solidarity these sneaky tactics peddle. I do.
Seriously, I love when conversation’s easy. When it feels like people get me. But it’s fleeting.
Those edges still get in my way given time. The illusion of belonging fades, and I realize I’m square all over again.
Then I start to wonder if… it’s me. Just me.
But I forget to consider the system that promised these things it never could deliver. A system that’s flawed. It will fail every time.
A system built on sameness cannot produce the belonging I crave. It’s inherent flaws will surface: If every peg’s the same, who’s to miss it when it’s gone?
I’d rather be a peg that’s missed because without it, there’s a hole.
But systems like this are harder to find. They take work. They have to be built.
That’s what I want to build.
I want to build it with you.
I want to belong to a community that carves out a space just for me. A place where everyone is different. And I want that for you.
Can you see it?
Let’s vision storm! This job is bigger than me. I need you. I’ve carved out the space, and believe me. Something will be missing without you.
“Where there is no vision, the people perish…” (Proverbs 29:18a Kjv)
What do you see?
